Porch & Den Hansen 8-inch Full-size Gel Memory Foam Futon Mattress

With any memory foam there is a slight odor that goes away in a few days. The mattress comes with a 8th piece of paper taped to the plastic that tells you it's vacuum packed and that it will regain it's proper measurements in my own words. Now, with that being said, OMG!! This mattress is amazingly comfortable, I have rods and screws in my spine and it's almost impossible for me to be comfortable. I bought for my guest but oh well, no one is here now. Shipping time was great. I do however wish that I had to sign for it and future orders. I will recommend this to everyone I know in need of a futon mattress.

I gave this futon a 3-star rating because it was not gel memory foam as advertised. The mattress was only filled with cotton batting, no foam chunks, no foam liners, no foam at all. Despite this, it is still a very comfortable 8" mattress. I was interested in the gel foam as I thought it may hold a "couch" form a bit better. The cotton batting filled one is very similiar to the one I had in college, frumpy but comfortable. I know other reviews have had similiar results and others seemed to get more of a gel foam product due to the off-gassing time period common to gel foam. I contacted Overstock and they very nicely offered to return it, but I was not sure what I would get back in return plus the hassle of trying to re-package the mattress for shipping, so I kept the one delivered with a small monetary refund. Satisfied with the product, but not what I ordered and not what appeared to be advertised.

We love this futon very comfortable will buy again but probably get the 10-inch!!!

So to be fair, after receiving the mattress, hating it, and calling to find out how to ship it back, I did find a more detailed description of the mattress which did indicate that the memory foam part of the mattress was only an inch and a half. So I can't say it was false advertising. The mattress had this tiny memory foam sheet sandwiched in between about a foot of this weird stuffing like material. I can't even describe it well and wish I had taken a photo. Just was not what I thought it would be, but like I said I did not research it well enough. Cost me a ton to ship it back. Really expensive mistake.

Turns out it's comfortable for a futon mattress! Beware though: I was expecting an actual gel memory foam mattress--it's not really. The mattress is filled with some kind of fluffy material, visible when you unzip the cover. Apparently, the gel foam is a one-inch core buried deep within the fluff. The mattress is very heavy.

The matress was delivered a day early and was surprisingly light in weight. Instead of a frame we stacked the futon on a full size box spring. The feeling of this bed on the first laying and even after 3 weeks is luxurious and while soft doesn't create extreme sagging that makes for a sore back or neck in our case. The consistency of the material makes turning more of a chore but the compromise is absolutely NO bounce and jostle to wake your bedfellow. The dimensions of the futon are not only smaller than the box spring but the otherworldly squishiness of the gel foam creates a 6 inch zone around the edge of the matress were your own weight creates a severe slope and prime opportunity for falling off the bed. The reverse is true for the center of the bed where the crowded inhabitants in the center create a depression that both smooshes you together and requires an act of God to get free. Finally, despite the sexual connotations of the review title, the marshmallow-like yield and lack of bounce cause the bed to work against the sex act in almost every way. A good matress for daily Sleep but it has drawbacks. Worthy of a guest bed for sure!

A very nice futon mattress. Would be nice if it was a little thicker--like 10 inches--but then it probably wouldn't fit on the frame too well. Would recommend to those looking for a good futon mattress.

This futon gel mattress shipped quickly and there was very little packaging smell and aired out fast. I love the feel of it and the button pockets give it a little style. It feels great to sit or sleep on and I am glad I went with 8 inch. The only criticism I have is some of the sides have short colored string hanging off the seam, the seam is still intact but I am concerned it will come undone if I try to remove them. Also, it does hold in your body heat a bit, so it is probably great for cold weather places. Over all good quality, and it has been used quite a bit in the last few months. I got the Royal Blue and I love the deep color and microfiber feel because it cleans up very easily. Terrific product!

This mattress replaced the standard one from a discount store. It is far more comfortable and is thicker. It does NOT make our futon feel like a quality sofa or memory foam - didn't expect it to. But it seems to be just the right solution for our small space. The fabric looks nice, though I'm not sure the tufts are built to last since the fabric is a bit finer woven than I expected. It took a couple of days to air out and settle into place, which I expected since it is memory foam and was packed by the factory. The item was shipped on time and arrived in great condition. Overall I'm pleased. Im giving 5 stars for being a good quality for the price with simple ordering and free shipping.

The mattress is way better than the one I had prior. Very comfy. But the chemical smell is overwhelming. Its been a few weeks and I am still airing out the room. Would not put this down right away next time. I would let it air outside a few days before bringing it in.

The mattress is very comfortable and holds up well. We use ours as an extra bed for company.

Very comfortable for a futon mattress. Our guests love it. Only complaint is that it has a hard time folding up because it's so substantial, but I think it should break in in the next few weeks.

I should have paid heed to the reviews. I really haven't tried to sleep on it because of the smell. Granted I have a keen sense of smell but when my wife asks "What's that smell? I knew it was bad. I've had a fan blowing on it for 3 weeks and it hasn't done any good. So if you can't smell anything you might be ok but I'm afraid I'm stuck with something only my dogs will use and I'm not sure of that.

We ordered this mattress to use as a futon and double as a spare bed. It is VERY comfortable - our guests always comment on how well they slept on it. However, it is disappointing in it's appearance. The mattress we received looks unfinished, with loose threads hanging from the seams and the pintucks appearing unfinished. I will keep this mattress, but will likely purchase a cover to go over it.

We purchased this mattress for our sleeping porch and we have really enjoyed many evenings sleeping under the stars and also curling up to watch beautiful sunsets. Very comfortable and heavy duty!

Not sure if it is the Futon or the gel memory foam mattress but I have a very hard time making this go from a bed to a sofa. I usually just sleep on it as a sofa because of this.

I dislike the fact that this item has cotton batting at each end of the foam layers. It would be a big help to consumers to see a cutaway view of what the mattress looks like inside. There is really no way to verify if the gel memory foam is of equal dimensions both top and bottom. This is a problem since a thicker memory foam piece means that the mattress can only be used on one side rather than have it be truly reversible. Also, there are small holes near the tufting parts on the mattress. Some of these small holes leak a white material that leaks out from these holes. The quality is not anything close to what I would have expected since it contains manufacturing flaws. No, I would not recommend it to a friend.

This mattress is very comfortable to sit and sleep on. However, I don't like the price, and it is EXTREMELY hard to clean if anything gets on it. Make sure you get a mattress protector, because once you get any type of liquid in it, it is impossible to clean out. I wouldn't recommend this without paying extra for a cover, especially if you have kids or pets. But I do recommend based on comfort.

Bought for our college son. He said it’s very comfortable and seems well made. Hard to shop online for a mattress and for someone else but this is a keeper.

Comfortable, but absolutely terrible smell. It has been off gassing on our screen porch for a year and it still has a strong smell like paint. We return it if we could.

Really comfortable and stable. Good quality. Thick and comfortable. Sometimes futons are too hard but this one isn't.

This is very nice. Still looking for just the right Futon frame but the matress is very nice!

It is so nice I sleep on it every night. I have dogs and so it's easy to vaccume it and get the dog for off. It is a little heavy to go back and forth from bed to couch.

At first the smell was a little strong but that faded ....we sprayed febreze to help it. Have had several people sleep on it and really like it.

This mattress is very comfortable. It was perfect to go with the Copper Grove Porters futon frame we also got. It has worked out really well in our guest bedroom.
